How to Read Point and Figure Chart
Point and Figure charts are comprised of a series of X's and O's that represent the price movements over time. X represents increase in price and O represents decline.
Box Size
Each stack contains a stack of either X's or O's, but seldom both. The scale of charts can be changed by the specified box size which is a minimum representation of price movement. If smaller box size is used, small time interval is applied. If larger box size is used, bigger time interval is applied.
Reversal Amount
A stack of X's represents an up trend and a stack of O's represent a down trend. A new stack forms when price reverse. It is calculated by multiplying the box size by the reversal amount. For example, if box size is set at 3 and reversal amount at 5. A new stack will be formed when the price rise or fall 5 x 3 = 15 points.
Point and Figure charts show price movement with flexible parameters. If you are familiar with bar chart or candlestock chart and having trouble understanding the box size, you may treat box size as smaller time interval. Reversal amount is simply how fast you want the new stack to be formed.
